My Mother, Doris Fouch, passed away last week... She was 86 years old. Born in 1923, She grew up during the Great Depression. In 1942 she joined the US Navy and served as a WAVE during much of World War II. Doris was an alumni of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. She was an artist, a museum curator and gallery director and a patroness of the arts all of her life. A charming and witty person she always had time to help everyone. I owe my lifelong appreciation of music and the arts to her and my dad. I posted a tribute to here here > [link]

A pizzaria here in Portland is hosting a show of my photos thru the month of November. There is a tradition here in Portland of gallery/eatery establishments and Atomic Pizza is just such a place! I left Portland last Weds. night about 8pm. The fair site is about 400 miles north of Portland, just below the Canadian Border in the upper center of Washington State. After a long drive I got there just after 3am Thurs. morning and was the 14th vendor in line, By the time they opened the gates for vendors at 10am there were over 200 vheicles waiting to go in and start setting up! This is a VERY organized event. Plenty of volunteers, CLEAN port-a-potties and security. It was cold on Thurs morning and windy but I got set up and ready for opening to the public on Friday. Good friends and a warm fire that evening. With the drum circle throbbing away in the distance I fell asleep. It got down to 20 degrees that night... The fair opened the next day and I sold a few things. The wind blew for a while in the morning but it settled down by afternoon. That night it was colder! Saturday morning I found out it had gotten down to 10 degrees! I had been under 3 heavy quilts and an unzipped sleeping bag and my old bones were still cold. I got up, had some much welcome hot coffee and opend my booth. The food at the fair is good and varied. Gyros, pizza, BBQ, buffalo and elk burgers, fresh honey, homemade candies, all kinds of goodies! Yum! There were carvers, leatherworkers, painters and glass blowers. People selling handmade clothing, musical instruments, holograms and much more. Saturday the crowd stayed till almost midnight in spite of the fact that on Saturday night it got down to 0 degrees!!! (The drums still went on all night...) I survived Saturday night and spent Sunday packing and saying "goodbye" to other vendors I had met. I got back to Portland at 2am Monday the 13th.

Without an RV or a camper, or some kind of refuge from the cold, I don't think this old Hippy will be braving the cold for Fall Fair again, but I'll be there in the spring!

Since 1973 this huge barter fair has been held in the north central foothills of Washington State. [link] This year the Okanogan Family Faire will be held on October 9-11. I've never been there but I understand it's a great event! Over 300 vendors, live music, etc. I'm going to set up a booth and sell my photographic prints and some collectables and antiques. I'll be taking lots of pics and when I get back I'll be posting them here on dA...
